HJS neem jaarliks deel aan olimpiades in verskeie velde. ‘n Olimpiade is ‘n tipe kompetisie wat leerders se begrip, vlak van kennis en redeneringsvaardighede op ‘n hoër vlak toets.
Old Mutual South African Mathematics Olympiad
The South African Mathematics Olympiad for Grades 8 to 12 learners is the biggest Olympiad in the country with more than 100 000 learners taking part every year. This olympiad is divided into a junior (Gr 8–9) and senior (Gr 10–12) section and is written over three rounds. Every year more than 100 boys enter the first round to measure themself against the best in the country.
UCT Maths competition
The UCT Mathematics Competition, established in 1977, is an annual event for high schools in the Western Cape. It is held on an evening in April at the University of Cape Town campus and over 7500 learners from all over the Western Cape take part. Selection for the Paarl Boys’ High School team is based on results in the first round of the Maths Olympiad and the competition to make this team is always very strong.
De Beers English Olympiad
The English Olympiad is open to all learners (HL and FAL English) in Grades 9–12. The Olympiad takes the form of an “open book” examination and learners are supplied with a prescribed anthology consisting of a short selection of interesting writings that includes poetry, prose and a dramatic monologue. There are wonderful prizes to be won for the top learners in South Africa.

Die SA Taalbond is ‘n organisasie wat sedert 1953 jaarliks ‘n tweetaligeheidseksamen (Afrikaans en Engels) aanbied vir leerders in die hoërskool. Dit is ‘n geleentheid vir leerders om hulle tweetaligheid te bepaal en ‘n sertifikaat te verwerf wat hul tweetaligheid aandui. HJS neem jaarliks aan hierdie eksamen deel.
The Programming Olympiad is a challenge for learners who can use a programming language like Scratch, Python, Java, C++ or Delphi. In the first round, the participants have to solve a number of problems using the language of their choice. For the second round and also for the final round the languages are more restricted.
The Talent Search Olympiad is a computational thinking Olympiad. It is in the form of an online test. Every year a number of boys take part in this Olympiad over two divisions, i.e. the senior division for Gr 10 and Gr 11, and the elite division for Gr 12 and university students.
